- ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY GLOSSARY
A turbulent mixture of gas and rock fragments, most of which are ash-sized particles, ejected violently from a crater or fissure. The mass of pyroclastics is normally of very high temperature and moves rapidly down the slopes or even along a level surface.\GLOSSARY OF VOLCANIC TERMSA type of pyroclastic flow comprising dominantly ash-sized particles. Hot ash flows may be called "glowing avalanches" or "nuee ardentes", and if their volume is large enough, may eventually form deposits known as welded tuffs. These types of flows are extremely dangerous and historically have killed hundreds of thousands of people.
